e wrote the mock didactic poem called Hasty Pudding,which is his one real literary claim to remembrance. He sub-sequently returned to Paris and withdrew from politicalaffairs, shocked by the atrocities of the Revolution. TheUnited States government appointed him in 1795 consul toAlgeria, where he negotiated a treaty with the Dey. Thefollowing year he consummated a league with the authoritiesof Tripoli, by which all the American prisoners were releasedfrom captivity. He resigned his consulship in 1797 andreturned to Paris, where he engaged in trade and amassed acomfortable fortune. Disposing of his real estate in France, he returned to hisnative land; but his supposed authorship of the Song of theGuillotine, in connection with the assistance he gave Painein the publication of the Age of Reason, caused him to becoldly received by the New England people. He thereforebought an estate in the District of Columbia, in the vicinityof Georgetown, where he built an elegant mansion, and gave 306
