THERE have been few men inAmerican wars more daringthan General George A. Cus-ter. As a cavalryman, hewon a place in military history by hisbravery. Custer was a captain on thestaff of General Pleasonton duringthe operations early in 1863. Thisphotograph was taken near BrandyStation, Virginia, in June, 1863. Itshows Custer on his black war-horseconferring with Pleasonton who isastride a gray charger. The Confed-erate cavalry had succeeded in break-ing a part of the Federal rank.Pleasonton turned in his saddle andcalled to Custer: Ride to our rightand get the battery in position to replyto these infernal guns. Custer spurredhis horse into the thunder of cannonand the crash of musket and carbinevolleys. The man is lost, mut-tered Pleasonton. Suddenly, emerg-ing from the bank of smoke, theUnion batteries wheeled into viewunder the rapid fire. Custer dashedacross the field. From that momenthe became a notable figure in thewar. He was then but twenty-threeyears of age, but was immediatelya
