from theUnited States Army and invented theBurnside rifle. He was one of McClel-lans intimate friends, and while acivilian he was engaged with him onthe Illinois Central Railroad. Burn-side was in New York when the CivilWar broke out and hurried to thefront in command of the First RhodeIsland Volunteers. He fought at thefirst battle of Bull Run and com-manded an expedition that stormedthe North Carolina coast. He was inthe famous Battle of Roanoke Islandand Newbern and as a reward forthese successes he was given the rankof major-general. He later foughtthe Battle of Camden, attacked andreduced Fort Macon, and during thePeninsula Campaign fought at theBattle of South Mountain and An-tietam. When Lincoln first offeredBurnside the command held byMcClellan it is said that he refusedit three times. Not until he knewthat his friend must go did he con-cede to the wishes of the president.When Burnside took command of theUnion forces he was but thirty-nineyears old, but an experienced warrior.
