towhich its income was by no means adequate. In 1756,therefore, the parliament voted it the sum of lO,000/. andlarge sums were afterwards granted, to the averageamount of 53,000/. annually, till 1771, when they ceas-ed. It was still found, however, that the scheme of thehospital was extended too far; numerous abuses had creptin; and the governors were finally obliged to contracttheir views: but, at present, from the income of theirlanded and funded property, and the collections at thechapel, a sufficient sum is raised to maintain nearly 400children, of whom about 180 (the youngest) are reared incottages within twenty or thirty miles of London untilthey are five years of age, when they are received intothe hospital. The Foundling Hospital is a spacious and convenientedifice, with a good garden and commodious play-groundfor the children. The chapel is in the centre. Divine service is per-formed in the chapel twice on every Sunday, at eleven inthe forenoon, and at seven in the evening. The pews arein general let at a high rent: besides which therein alwaysa collection at the doors; and from the excellence of tf>emusic, the popularity of the preachers, and the influenceof fashion^ the annual sum derived from this sourceamounts to about 3,000/. Th-e kitchen of the hospital is an object worthy of in-spection: it is constructed on the plan of Count Rumford,and has caused a saving to the charity of twenty-five chal-drons of coals in the year.
