stockman and banker have made him oneof the prominent figures in Northern Montana. Mr. Broadwater was born at Memphis in ScotlandCounty, Missouri, November 22, 1861. son of ThomasJ. and Martha A. (Smoot) Broadwater. His fatherwas a native of Virginia, and at the age of nineyears went to Missouri with his sister, Mrs. AnnM. Elgin, who lived at St. Charles, where he fin-ished his education. In 1849 he and another youngman from that community started overland for Cali-fornia with a mule team, joining a caravan thatcrossed the plains. He was absent about two years,and had many of the experiences in the gold fieldsthat have been subject for history and romance. He returned to the East by way of the Isthmusof Panama and New York City, and thence backto St. Louis. His chief business was as an architectand building contractor, and in 1859 he moved toMemphis, Missouri, where he continued his pro-fession and business under the name of Legg &Broadwater. HISTORY OF MONTANA 691 cally the entire State of Missouri. One of theircontracts was the construction of the new wingsof the State Capitol at Jefiferson City. Thomas J.Broadwater after he retired from business frequentlyvisited his son at Fort Assiniboine, and took greatpleasure in hunting big game and fishing in theterritory. While so much of his lifes energieswere expressed in practical action, he was fondof books and literature, and composed some verycreditable verse. He was a democrat but had nothought of public office. He died at Memphis,Missouri, February 28, 1908, aged eghty-three years,five months and seventeen days. His widow, whowas born in Scotland County March 26. 1841, isstill living at the old Missouri homestead. Edward T. Broadwater earned his first money ofT-bearing brick in a brick yard at 75 cents a day,boarding himself. He was only twelve years of agewhen he performed that strenuous toil.
