The loss in fact represented alarge part of what those countries could produce over andabove replacements in twelve months. Already the Alliesdemands for guns had been hard to meet. The Admiraltywanted them for arming merchantmen, the air servicewanted great numbers for anti-aircraft purposes, and thearmies always wanted them. How to equip with guns thecoming American forces had been a pressing problem, whensuddenly was superadded to these tasks that of making goodthe loss of guns by the Italians. All the needed gunswould eventually be made, and the demands met, but thiswould take time. The Italian losses in men and materialwere enormous. More than 200,000 prisoners and 2,300guns fell into Teutonic hands.
