In 1898 he was elected a mem-ber of the Belleville Town Council, serving one term,and in 1903 he was honored with another election tothat body. He serv^ed five years as fire commissioner. He is a member and past master of BellevilleLodge No. 108, F. and A. M., Union Chapter R. A.M., Essex Hose Volunteers No. 3 of Belleville, andSeth Boyden Council, R. A. (in which he is past re-gent). He is a vestr\man and lay reader of ChristEpiscopal Church. He is an excellent representative of the progressive,energetic, and successful young men of the times. HENRY R. CREWS, of Totowa, Pas-saic County, Superintendent of Lau-rel Grove Cemetery, was bom inChatham, Kent County, England,December 4, 1869, son of James G.and Mary A. (Cook) Crews. Both of his parents were natives of Plymouth,England. They removed with their family to Can-ada, and are now living at North Bay in the Provinceof Ontario, where the father conducts a successful

(Cook) Crews: George Rich-ard (living in Pembroke, Ontario) ; Henry R., thesubject of our sketch; Beatrice, residing with herbrother, Henry R.; Annie, wife of Edward J. Brienof North Bay, Ontario; Helen; Henrietta E., andthree others who died in childhood. Henry R. Crews came with his parents to Canadawhen a child. He received his early education in thepublic and high schools of the Town of Pembroke,Ontario, subsequently pursuing a scientific course inthe School of Science of Toronto. During his boy-hood he learned the boat and skiff building businesswith his father, but deciding on other occupations heobtained employment with the Canada Pacific Rail-road Company, with which he served for one year inthe engineering corps. He then went to Buffalo, N.Y., where for the next five years he held a position inthe Forest Lawn Cemetery. Resigning this place hecame to New Jersey, and on t
