For many years of a very busylife John Thompson, extensive farmer and ranch-man on Little Box Elder Creek, twenty-five milessouth of Havre, followed railroading, and in thatand other lines of activity became well acquaintedwith people and communities throughout his nativeCanada and also the northwest of the United States.Mr. Thompson is a self-made man, educated in theschool of experience, and in following his interestingcareer one may somewhat understand the wide tol-erance and broad view that have made him so highlyesteemed and so useful a citizen to his county. Henry Thompsons second marriagewas to Mary OConnor, and eight children were bornto this union, six of whom are living. HentyThompson was born at Castleblayney, CountyMonaghan, Ireland, and when sixteen years old hecame to Canada, being landed from a sailing vesselat Quebec. From there he went to Montreal, wherehe learned the bakery trade and became expert inculinary matters, working afterward as a masterbaker and at one time was cook for a lumbercamp in Michigan. He retired finally to WestToronto, and died there in 1812, when aged seventy-eight years. He belonged to the conservative partyin politics, and was a faithful member of the Churchof England. Before the death of his mother John Thompsonwent to school at Belleville, where the family thenlived, but there were many children
