HISTORY OF MONTANA 981 returned East and stopped in Tama County, Iowa,where he was a neighbor of Tama Jim Wilson,later secretary of agriculture of the United StatesGovernment, and found him an excellent neighborindeed. Mr. Davidson rented a farm, and when hehad harvested his fall crop sold it and came to Mon-tana. Upon his arrival in the state he engaged withTurner & Grimm at Lavina, Meagher County, as asheep herder. Leaving that firm he went to theSnowy Mountains and managed a sheep ranch fortwo years for Witmer Brothers. His next locationwas at Melville in the Sweet Grass country, and therehe bought a bunch of cattle and ran them until 1891,at which time he moved to Malta, moving his stockand establishing himself i^ miles north of that cityas a rancher on his homestead, which he called theYadlee Ranch. At once he embarked in the sheepbusiness, and ran his sheep until the dry-landerstook up the range and made the sheep business ahazardous venture. He disposed of his propertythere
