^y/-^ J&^^t^ INDIANA AND INDIANANS Gen. Jefferson C. Davis. One of themost distinguished Indianans who mademilitary life his profession was Gen. Jef-ferson C. Davis, who first volunteered hisservices to the profession of arms at theoutbreak of the war with Mexico, and wasa member of the regular army thereafterfor thirty years. He was born in Clark County, Indiana,March 2, 1827. He was of an old Ken-tucky family. His grandparents, Williamand Charlotte Davis, died in Kentucky,the former in 1840, at the age of sixty-seven, and the latter on May 6, 1851. Wil-liam Davis, Jr., father of General Davis,was born July 29, 1800, and died March 21,1879. He married Mary Drummond, whowas born June 24, 1801, and died Novem-ber 24, 1881. Their children were: Jef-ferson C.; James W., born February 24,1829, died October 12, 1906; John, bornDecember 27, 1830, died May 6, 1859; Jo-seph, born November 14, 1832, died Au-gust 6, 1867; George, born November 21,1834, died in March, 1901; William, bornMarcindianaindianans04dunn
