fouryears studied art in the Herron Art In-stitute at Indianapolis. Going abroad, hewas a student of portrait painting underthose well known masters William N. Chaseat Florence and Robert Henri (American)at Madrid. Returning to this country Mr. Adamsestablished his studio at Indianapolis in1909, where for nine years he has beendoing serious portrait work, and he hasalso studios in both Philadelphia and NewYork, where he spends some of his time. Of his position as an artist and hisgrowing fame the records of fact speakmore eloquently than could rhetorical ap-preciation and praise. In 1914 his por-trait of Alexander Ernestinoff of Indian-apolis won the Thomas R. Proctor prizeat the animal exhibition of the NationalAcademy of Design in New York. In 1915his portrait of Caroline Hendricks wonfirst prize at the Indiana Artists Exhibi-tion in Richmond, Indiana. In 1916 hisportrait of Alexander Ernestinoff, abovementioned, won the J. I. In August, 1918, his portraitof John McClure Hamilton, the Philadel-phia artist, won first prize at Newport,Rhode Island, in the annual exhibition ofthe Art Association of that city. Portraitof Joseph Pennell, well known etcher andlithographer, won the Mr. and Mrs. FrankG. Logan medal and $1,500, Chicago ArtInstitute, 1918. Among Indiana celebrities he has paintedthe best known are Governor Frank Hanly,Governor Ralston, the late Charles W.Fairbanks, Booth Tarkington, MeredithNicholson, James Whitconib Riley, HenryDouglas Pierce, Henry Talbott, EliasJacoby, Theodore C. Steele and CharlesDennis. Besides the portrait of John McClureHamilton, mentioned above, Mr. Adamshas within the past year or two painted athis Philadelphia studio the portraits ofCharles M.
