Selling his market in 1900, Mr. Matzkebegan handling his means to develop realestate property, and from the point ofview of public interest the important partof his record is as a builder. He haserected many business blocks and resi-dences, among which are the IndianapolisConservatory of Music, now known as theMatzke apartments, the Marion, Arlingtonand Marina apartments, besides severalhomes. Mr. Matzke bought and still ownssome of the original town lots of Indian-apolis. He bought and laid out on EastOhio Street Matzkes Addition oppositeHighland Park. He now gives all his timeto the management of the apartmenthouses he owns and built. Mr. Matzke is a naturalized Americancitizen and none could surpass him in loy-alty to the land of his adoption and wherehis real success in life has been made.Though he had very little opportunity toattend school as a boy, he has always keptin touch with the bigger things of life, is

INDIANA AND INDIANANS 1823 a constant reader and is a student ofmathematics and history. He is a memberof the First English Lutheran Church. December 22, 1877, Mr. Matzke marriedMiss Mary Schoennemann, whose parentswere John and Mary (Sachse) Schoenne-mann, the former of whom died in 1898and the latter in 1883. The Schoenne-manns were for many years engaged intruck farming near Indianapolis, and Mrs.Matzke was born and reared within theenvirons of that city. Mr. and Mrs. Matzke had four children:Clara, who died in 1916; Harry, who mar-ried Miss Clara Power and has five chil-dren, Marion, Richard, Gilbert (deceased),Robert and Ralph ; Albert, an illustrator inNew York City for the past twenty years,was an instructor for several years in theArt Students League of that city; andHattie, deceased.
