htlywounded with arrows. But few of the Indians had fire-arms, and thej^ showed a fargreater willingness to steal, than to fight. Several collisions also occurred at FortDefiance, between our i^ickets and small parties of Indians, who presented themselvesin a thieving attitude; but they never appeared in force, or exhibited any hostileintention, beyond that of appropriating to their own use our property and animals, inwhich design they met with a signal defeat, and then retired from the field. Aboutthe 20th of October, 1851, forty Moqui Indians, headed by their governor, presentedthemselves at Fort Defiance, and requested an interview on the part of the Navajoes,who, they said, were desirous of living on terms of peace and friendshiji with theAmericans. A favorable answer was returned, and on the 26th of the same month, aformidable body of Navajoes, well mounted, and armed with guns, lances, bows, andarrows, presented themselves in front of the garrison, and solicited an interview.
