Six automobiles loaded with war-correspondents, five rep-resenting London newspapers and sixteen American news-papers and press associations, after receiving summons fromAmerican headquarters, had reached the St. Mihiel salienton the night of September 11. It had taken them ten hoursto go from Chateau-Thierry to the St. iMihiel battle-zone,but they were eager to go, since for weeks they had beenwaiting for word to make the journey. On arrival theywere invited to confer at 9.30 with an American officer incharge of the intelligence section. With large maps pinnedupon w^alls, they stood around him in a circle while he ex-plained in detail exactly what the American troops operat-ing with the French expected to do the next day.
