ancashire, England. His father,Thomas Brooks, now living at Livingston at the ageof seventy-two, was born at Manchester, England,in 1847. He was an English coal miner, and firstcame to the United States in 1886, spending sometime in a coal mining district in Iowa. He thenwent back to England and brought over his familyand soon afterward went to the coal mining dis-trict of Timberline, in Gallatin County, Montana.He came to Park County in 1896 and for the pastfifteen years has been employed in the NorthernPacific Railway shops at Livingston. He is a re-publican, is affiliated with Bozeman Lodge, Knightsof Pythias, and a member of the International Asso-ciation of Machinists. In Lancashire, England, inFebruary, 1870, Thomas Brooks married ElizabethTaylor. She w^as born in Lancashire in 1S49. Eliz-abeth, the oldest of their children, is the wife ofJ. W. HISTORY OF MONTANA age, while May, the youngest, is the wife of R. V.Pfiel, an architect at Minneapolis. Joseph Brooks received his first common schoolprivileges in Gallatin County, and later attendedschool in Park County, including the county highschool through the junior year. He left school in1897 and the following nine years was learning andworking at the jewelers trade at Livingston. Inthe meantime he had become interested in politics,and had built up a large acquaintance and following.In 1906, when twenty-si.x years of age, he waselected county treasurer of Park County, and by re-election in igo8 served two terrns.
