r seven years, when he was ap-pointed chief of police of Whitefish, serving credit-ably under its first mayor, A. E. Long, who for atime was superintendent of the Great Northern Rail-road, but resigned and went into a general merchan-dise business at Whitefish. His successor, H. E.Snyder, reappointed Mr. Parent, and he also servedas constable. SheriiT W. H. OConnell then ap-pointed Mr. Parent one of his deputies, and duringhis administration Frederick LaBore was hung forthe murder of a Mr. Yocum and his son, which wasone of the most cold-blooded crimes in the annalsof the state. The partner of Frederick LaBore,George Hobbinger, was sent to the penitentiary forlife. One of the most stirring experiences of Mr.Parents official life occurred in connection withthe robbery of the Great Northern Railroad atRondo, Montana, by two notorious desperadoes.Frank Howser and a McDonald, who had terrorizedall of the western country by their boldness andutter contempt of official interference. HISTORY OF MONTANA Parent, with his associates, set out, determined tocapture these men, and it was Mr. Parent who suc-ceeded, arresting the men in a dining car after theyhad boarded the train at Bonners Ferry for Spo-kane, Washington. At the time of the arrest thetrain was just pulling into Spokane. Excitement ranhigh, and it was found necessary to take themquietly out of Spokane rather than wait for extra-dition papers, and deliver them to Flathead County,from whence they were taken to Helena, Montana,by United States Marshal Merifield. The men man-aged to escape from the jail, but Howser was re-captured. The other man is still at large. WhenMr. Parent captured these men $14,700 of the $40,000they had stolen was found on their persons, in theoriginal packages. It took courage of the highestorder to arrest these men, but Mr. Parent was neverlacking in this characteristic, and took the event aspart of his days work.
