nderson, Daysforeman, and the first cowboy young Cogswejl hadever seen. Henderson was a character and a like-able fellow and subsequently engaged in the saloonbusiness at Great Falls when that was a mere vil-lage. Aside from Lovejoy, Moran and Day therewas not another evidence of white settlement be-tween Glendive and Poplar, except perhaps the Lind-say sheep outfit at Glendive. This journey, beingMr. Cogswells introduction to Eastern Montana,was accomplished without special incident, thoughit gave him his first glimpses of the wild life ofthe Northwest. The party saw numerous deer, ante-lope and coyotes. Mr. Cogswell succeeded Mr. Massey in charge ofthe Indian day school at Wolf Point. The schoolwas then held in the end of one of the log stablesbelonging to the agency. About a year previouslythe schools had been taken over by the Governmentfrom the Presbyterian Missionary Board. V^MywxuA HISTORY OF MONTANA 905 of them presented themselves every morning to thenew teacher, though their chief incentive was thefree dinner served by the Government from thecommissary. This dinner was prepared by a detailof the larger girls from the school. It was a periodof hard times for the tribe, and they took advan-tage of every opportunity to keep soul and bodytogether. Mr. Cogswell remained at his post as ateacher less than a year, and on leaving the stableschool went to the store of T. C. Power as a clerk. He therefore began his experience as a merchantat Wolf Point in 1886. Mr. Power soon sold hisbusiness to Mr. Shaw, and Mr. Cogswell remainedwith the latter, under the name of H. M. Cozier &Company, and was with the Poplar branch of theconcern during the winter of 1886-87. In the latteryear he returned to Wolf Point, and in February,1891, bought out the business, and his title and re-sponsibilities as agency merchant has been with himever since. In 18
