He was to have received $400 in bountyand thirty-five days furlough. In the meantimehe was sent to New Bern, North Carolina, and hclie<lhold \arious sections of that state. He was always a vigilant and useful soldier.In one battle a sharpshooter had been making havocof Union officers. Mr. Barnes put his hat on a stick,and after drawing the sharpshooters fire locatedthe enemy and shot him out of a tree. He was inthe first brigade that entered the City of Richmond.In the meantime he had been advanced from privateto second sergeant. His last battle was at Peters-burg, and on January 26, 1866, he was mustered outand honorably discharged at Philadelphia. In thelatter month of his service he was detailed to takea colored census in Virginia, and also worked forthe Freedmens Bureau at Charlottsville, servingas justice of the peace and being detailed to col-lect property for the Government.
