ow did not disappear until about the middleof April, and by the first of May Mr. Duncan hadabout forty acres fenced in with posts and rails,and was ready to plant his first crop. In the fall of 1884 Flathead Valley held its firstelection. Montana being still a territory, there wasno vote for president. The people in the Flatheadwere in the jurisdiction of Missoula County, andthey only nominated township officers, all of thecounty to the Canadian line being Jocko Township.The offices to be filled were two justices of thepeace and one constable. John Lang and Mr. Dun-can were elected justices, and a few days after theelection Mr. Duncan started to Missoula, the countyseat, to qualify, driving 140 miles for that purpose.He had the honor of being the first official to qualify
