^J^4a3a C^-^€^ HISTORY OF MONTANA in Berlin, Germany, in 1843, and was tlnere broughtup and educated, as a youth serving an apprentice-ship at the stone masons trade. Immigrating tothe United States in 1861, he first followed his tradein Pennsylvania for a short time. Coming to Mon-tana in 1866, he located at Fort Benton, and subse-quently moved to Helena. Continuing at his trade,he did all the mason work for the Government atForts Yellowstone and Ellis, and at the Crow In-dian Reservation. He afterward prospected awhileat placer mining, being thus engaged until 1872, whenhe settled in Bozeman, Montana, where he wassuccessfully employed as a contractor in masonwork until 1886, as a pioneer resident helping tobuild the town and in the meantime acquiring titleto several business blocks. From 1886 until hisdeath, June 12, 1919, he liv&d retired from activebusiness, enjoying a well-earned leisure. He wasa stanch democrat in politics until Wilsons secondcampaign, when
