Max Dupain (1911-1992) was an Australian photographer who is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Australian photography. He was born in Sydney and began his career as a commercial photographer in the 1930s. Dupain's work is known for its modernist style, which emphasises bold lines, stark contrasts and geometric forms. He was particularly interested in capturing the Australian landscape and its people, and his photographs often feature images of beaches, buildings and everyday life in Australia. Dupain's most famous photograph is 'Sunbaker', taken in 1937, which has become an iconic image of Australian culture. The photograph shows a man lying on the beach, his head resting on his arms, his body turned towards the sun. The image has been interpreted as a celebration of the Australian way of life and has become a symbol of the country's identity. Throughout his career, Dupain received numerous awards for his work, including the Order of Australia in 1982. He continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1992, leaving behind a legacy of images that continue to inspire and captivate audiences today.
