At A is shown a form of construction for the arch above the fireplace thatis sometimes used; but it cannot be recommended as it is apt to cause the fireplace to smoke. Note air-spacebetween the brick chimney and the wood framing. Dotted lines show the fireplace flue carried across at an easyslant, to be carried up beside the furnace flue. In all cases the thimbles shouldbe set at the time of building the chim-ney, being careful that all joints arewell filled and tuck-pointed on both supporting the hearth, use iron barsmade of !/> by 2-in. iron; and on this laybrick edgewise, leaving a space of 3 or4 inches for concrete on which to laythe tile hearth. The fireplace should belined with firebrick, with the upperpart of the brick slanted toward the top
