s with business in Indianapolis, wherehe enjoys a position of special esteem andwhere he has been a resident for abouta quarter of a century. For any young man who has nothingelse beyond ambition and ability to workhard there is much encouragement andinspiration in the life of Henry E. Schorte-meier. He was born in the Province ofWestphalia, Prussia, Germany, August 30,1847. Thanks to the compulson educa-tional system of his native land he at-tended common schools six months a yearfor a period of seven yeai-s. When he wasonly nine years of age his parents puthim out to work in the neighborhood, andhe thus earned his own keep and livingand his wages were regularly turned backinto the family treasury. From that timeforward in fact he ■ never knew a homeexcept such as he could make for himself. In the meantime some relatives andfriends had come to America. In 1866, atthe age of nineteen, he decided to followthem. He made the voyage in the steer-age of a sailing vessel, and was ten weeks

In the meantime he had learnedand become thoroughly practiced in thecardinal virtues of industry and thrift,and it was these principles upon which hehas chiefly relied throughout his businesscareer. The first two years he spent atCincinnati were made up of the hardestkind of toil. During the summer monthshe worked as a common laborer in brickyards. During the winter he obtainedwork in harvesting ice, in storing coal incellars, and he seldom allowed any day topass in which he did not do something toearn an honest dollar. The next four yearshe spent as a hard working porter fora wholesale house. The scale of wages paidfor such work fifty years ago was muchlower than at present, and for that rea-son it is all tlie more remarkable that ^Ir.Schortemeier by 1872 managed to save thesum of .$550.
