more definite idea of their true condition, than half the volumes that have 456 STATE OF INDIAN ART. been written about them. But the native paintings that throw light on their domestichabits and habitations, are the most interesting; for they show that an air of comfort,of home, pervaded their dwelUngs: matted floors, crockery and basket ware, habitualapplication of the broom, hearths, cooking utensils, spinning, weaving, childrens cradlesin various forms, carved seats, artificial flowers, &c., are very expressive. The ordinarydress of women and girls within doors, moreover, indicates a marked advance in civili-zation.
