The way to tell that is to climb and see, saidJack. Dont you be afraid; I shall soon find outwhat it all means. Ill JACK CLIMBS THE BEANSTALK INSTANTLY he ran from his mothers side andbegan to climb. Up, up, and up he M^ent on theladder-like stalks till everything he had left behindhim, the cottage, the village and even the tall churchtower, looked very small; and still he could not seethe top of the beanstalk. He grew tired and thoughtof going back, but something urged him on, andhe knew he would succeed if he persevered, so aftertaking a good long rest he began to climb again.It was hours and hours since he left the ground, andwhen at last he reached the top he took but a hastyglance downwards, for it made him feel dizzy andfaint when he found that the cottage and the villagehad all faded out of siffht. JACK CLIMBS THE BEANSTALK 160 Jack and the Beanstalk But when Jack stepped from the top of the bean-stalk he found himself in a beautiful place, suchas he had never seen before. There were statelygroves and lovely meadows covered with sheep. Astream of pure water ran through the pastures, andnot far from him he could see a strong castle on ahill. Jack wondered very much that he had neverheard of this land or castle before, but still hewalked on toward it, looking at it all the time andhoping that he might get something to eat, for hewas very hungry after his long climb. But the castle was farther away than he thought,and finally, growing very weary, he sat down on apile of stones and rested his head on his hands.After a while he looked up and saw standing beforehim a beautiful lady, carrying in her hand a smallwand, on the top of which Mas a peacock of puregold.
