GRANTS ADMINISTRATION. 557 United States, just emerged from the furnace of war, smarting withwounds, and burdened with an enormous debt, built in a single yearmore than twice as many miles of railroad as Spain, ridden with herprecedents of kingcraft and priestcraft, has ever built in her wholecareer. The year 1871 is noted in American history for the burning ofChicago. On the evening of the 8th of October a fire broke out in DeKoven street, and was driven by a high wind into the lumber-yards andwooden houses of the neighborhood. The flames leaped the South Branchof the Chicago River and spread with great rapidity through the businessparts of the city. All day long the deluge of fire rolled on, crossed themain channel of the river, and swept into a blackened ruin the whole dis-trict between the North Branch and the lake as far northward as LincolnPark.
