Point whennineteen years old, but resigned thefollowing year and remained out ofthe army for the next six years, butreturned in the period preceding theMexican War, after which he was en-gaged in the survey of the northernlakes. He was one of the first to re-spond to the call in 1861. He tookpart in the early engagements of theArmy of the Potomac and was in theBattle of Mechanicsville and GainesMills and the Battle of NewmarketCrossroads. When Hooker waswounded at Antietam, Meade tookcharge of a corps and continued thebrave fight during the remainder ofthe day. He had two horses killedunder him and was slightly wounded,but did not leave the field. At Fred-ericksburg he led his men boldly tothe Confederate works. In the Battleof Chancellorsville, Meades corpscarried the earth-works and foughtfearlessly. On the twenty-eighthday of June, in 1863, Meadeassumed command of the Army of thePotomac. The tide of battle seemedto turn with his appointment and hisvictories are almost unparalleled.
