1891, he married Miss Ma-dora Maude Pierson. She is a daughter ofJohn C. and Martha Jane (Fowler) Pier-son, both natives of Indiana. Her father formany years was a successful contractor andbuilder. Mr. and Mrs. Millikan have onechild, Gaylord Barton. Thomas Madden. For over sixty yearsthe Madden family have been residents ofIndiana and for half a century have beenidentified with Indianapolis. Their accom-plishments and their contributions to thelife of the state and the city justify morethan passing mention of the family, whichwas founded here by the late Thomas Mad-den, who was a gallant soldier, a publicleader and a manufacturer, and whose sonis now at the head of one of Indianapolisleading industries. Near Delphi hetaught a country school. An incident ofhis career as a teacher was characteristicof the man throughout his life. The schoolof course had its typical bully, a big, redfisted boy who promised the youngerscholars that he would make short workof the master and run him out. The clashbetween authority and insubordinationcame at recess. It terminated in a fewminutes and the bully was given a welldeserved thrashing, which immediatelyraised the young schoolmaster in the esti-mation of the entire community and madehis success as a teacher assured. Thomas Madden was tall, of athleticbuild, straight as the proverbial arrow andhad an Irishmans happy way of acquiringfriends.
