SMITH, Jr., Investment Securities; Stocks, Bonds,Real-Estate Loans; .Etna Insurance Co.s Building.—Among the representa-tive men in the stock-brokerage business in Hartford, special mention shouldbe made of Mr. C. H. Smith, Jr., who for many years has occupied a prominentposition in this important department of finance. The business which he nowcontrols was formerly exclusively confined to loans on approved Westernmortgages, but in recent years its scope has been greatly enlarged and nowcomprehends operations in stocks, bonds, real-estate loans, and securities gen-erally, only the best and most desirable lines being handled. The businesswas established in 1870 by Mr. E. D. Tiffany, who was succeeded by Messrs.C. H. Smith & Co., the senior member of that firm being the father of thepresent head of the house. Mr. C. H. Smith, Sr., is a member of the Board ofDirectors of the Phoenix Insurance Company, and holds a similar position inthe Smyth Manufacturing Co. a
