Fort Fisher was now the mostimportant Confederate naval position.The first attack took place in the nightof December twenty-third, when apowder-boat was exploded under thetowering walls of the old fort. Itwas believed that it was leveled to theground, but in the morning the grimfort stood absolutely uninjured withits flag floating defiantly. An attackwas then led by the ironclads, fol-lowed by the monitors and frigates.A naval officer in describing it says:Their sides seemed a sheet of flame,and the roar of their guns like amighty thunderbolt. The enemytook refuge in their bomb-proofs.Owing to misunderstanding betweenarmy and navy the fort was not taken.An excellent photograph was securedof one of the gunboats in the FortFisher expedition—the Santiago deCuba, and the negative is oneof the finest naval pictures ever taken. DISMANTLED GUN AT FORT FISHER IN 1865 PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN AT FORT FISHER, NORTH CAROLINA, SHOWING DESTRUCTION OF GUN CARRIAGE IN 1865 THE last stronghold of theSouthern Confederacy on theAtlantic Coast fell early in1865. On the twelfth of Jan-uary operations were agreed upon forthe final assault on Fort Fisher and aphotograph was taken of the fleet asit lay off the coast. On the morningof the thirteenth the ironclads openeda terrific fire. Fort Fisher was atthis time much stronger than at thefirst attack. Troops had reinforcedthe garrison. Damages from the firstbombardment had been repaired andnew defenses added. In describingthe downfall of the fort one who par-ticipated says: I believe there hadnever before been such a storm ofshell in any naval engagement. Atnoon on the fifteenth the attempt wasmade for the sailors and marines toland. From thirty-five of the sixtyships of the fleet boats were lowered,and with flags flying, pulled towardthe beach in line abreast, a most spir-ited scene
