and tried invain to get a seat in the Constitutional Convention of theState of New York. In fact, all through his great work hemet opposition; but with each rebuff he rose to greater exer-tions than before. His Codes of Civil and Criminal Pro-cedure were published in 1850. He then went on to preparea code, political, civil, and penal, which should cover thewhole province of American law. The civil code of NewYork he rewrote eighteen times. It was self-sacrificing laborwhich occupied eighteen years, for the last sixteen of which hereceived no compensation whatever, and on it he expendedhimself at least $6,000 in assistance. These codes form fivevolumes; the Civil, Penal and Political Codes give thesubstantive law, and the Codes of Civil and Criminal Pro-ceedings prescribe the practice of the courts. The civil andcriminal codes have been adopted generally throughout theUnion, and Fields work was likewise admired and copied inthe English colonies. When he traveled around the world he 356
