PRELIMINARY NOTE. The results presented in this paper, and the evidence onwhich they are based, were theoretically anticipated by thewriter prior to the examination of the artifacts. Indeed theywere first confirnied by an earlier cursory handling of alarge collection of Mandan flint artifacts collected by Mr.Brower for the Minnesota Historical Society; but at thattime it was incf)nvcnient to enter upon the discussion. Sim-ilar conclusions seem to be warranted by the weathering ofsome Oklahoma specimens. In later discussion these factswill be presented. The main purpose of this note is to call attention to thefact that Mr. Brower was fully aware of the important bear-ing of the rude culture of the Quivira on the question ofpaleolithic man in America, as shown by the following quo-tation from his Harahey (p. 109): I was so impressed by the developments of unusual in-terest, indicating the existence of two stages of ancient cul-ture near the Kansas chert beds, that a series of the chippeweatheringofabor00wincrich
