vanced in ability, expe-rience and reputation as a safe and ablelawyer, and already has a secure positionin the Indianapolis bar. He was born in Wayne County, Indiana,March 18, 1881, a son of John and Eliza-beth (Atkinson) Clinehens. The fatherwas a native of Ohio, and at the age oftwenty-one located at Webster, Indiana,and for twenty-five years was the honestvillage blacksmith there, a good workman,an honorable gentleman, and widely es-teemed for his many virtues. For thirty-five years he was active in the MethodistEpiscopal Church, was an advocate of tem-perance, and a democratic voter. Of hisfamily of four children Stephen A. wasthe youngest and one of the two still living. As a boy he attended grammar and highschools in Wayne County, and later was astudent in the literary and law depart-ments of Valparaiso University. He com-pleted his education in the IndianapolisLaw School, where he was graduated in1906. After his admission to the bar Mr.Clinehens was connected with the law firm

He has suc-cessfully represented a number of clientsand has had participation in many inter-esting cases. One of these calls for spe-cial mention. In March, 1918, he defendedthirteen Montenegrins who were tried forseditious conspiracy in the Federal Courtof this district. Mr. Clinehens assembledsuch testimony and evidence as to convincethe court and free all of his clients. Thisservice did not go unrecognized, and KingNicholas of Montenegro recently conferredupon Mr. Clinehens the Cross of Officerof Prince Danilo I as a recompense for hisservices to King Nicholas countrymen andnation. Mr. Clinehens is affiliated with theKnights of Pythias and is a member of theMethodist Church. November 27, 1902,he married Miss Kate E. Mabey, who wasborn in England. Her father, Joseph Ma-bey, came to the United States when Mrs.Clinehens was a child, settling i
