ust26, 1858, was educated in the publicschools and in early youth entered the es-tablishment of D. Root & Company, withwhich his father was identified. This man-ufacturing firm was succeeded by the In-dianapolis Stove Company, organized andincorporated in 1877. Henry W. Bennett,then only nineteen years of age, becamesecretary and treasurer of the company.With the passing years this company be-came one of the leading manufacturing in-dustries of its kind in the United States,with an output distributed to practicallyevery section of the Union. The successand development of the company was inno small degree due to the initiative andprogressive ideas of Mr. Bennett. Having laid the foundation of a success-ful business career Mr. Bennett manifestedthat tendency so wholesome in America tomake his influence felt in civic and politi-cal life. He has been an active leader inthe republican party of Indiana since1890, and from 1898 to 1906 was treasurerof the Indiana Republican State Central

While his position and influ-ence have always made him something ofa public character, his chief official dis-tinction was as postmaster of Indianapolis.He was appointed postmaster January 25,1905, upon the recommendation of SenatorBeveridge. He administered the postmas-tership until May 15, 1908. During histerm the handsome Federal building of In-dianapolis was completed and occupied. Mr. Bennett resigned from the localpostoffice in order to devote himself unre-servedly to the affairs of the State LifeInsurance Company of Indianapolis, ofwhich he had been elected president in1907. This is one of the strongest andbest supported life insurance organizationsin Indiana, and for ten years its affairshave been ably directed by Mr. Bennett. October 8, 1890, he married Miss ArianaHolliday. She was born and reared in In-dianapolis, daughter of William J. andLucy (Redd) Holliday. Mr. and Mrs.Bennett have two children, EdwardJacquelin and Louise. John Franc
