These observations are introduced by the following letter, which may serve to denotethe opportunities the author has had for observing the habits and character of theIndians beyond the line of the Mississippi. Although the subject principally beforehim was a particular tribe seated in Iowa, at the time the remarks were made, theywere believed to be generally applicable to the whole number of tribes who arebrought within the influence of moral teaching. Too much stress may appear to belaid on Christianity as the precursor of the arts and civilization, but it is believedthe experience of teachers of all denominations concurs in this view.
