During the days following this, I proved the ages of nearly a dozen of these children, by gaining access to Family Records, Life Insurance papers, and through conversations with the children and parents, and found these that I could prove to be working now, or during the past year at 10 and 11 years of age, some of them having begun before they were ten. Further search would reveal dozens more. (See Hine Report). Location: Lindale, Georgia.

Sanford Cotton Mill. Accident case. Carl Thornburg a 12 year old boy who went to work at 11. A few weeks ago he caught his arm in the "lapper" machine, and broke it in 2 places. He said: "I sure didn't mean to. Was jus goin through the lapper room an fust thing I knew everything went black." The family is hard-up. Father is a paralytic. Here is a real chance for a mill to do a benevolent deed by making some recompense to this crippled boy and his paralytic father. They think it's charity to give a boy work under legal age, but when he is injured they forget that side of it. No suggestion of any kind of recompense has been heard. Jim Browning said he was 12 years old, but that is doubtful. Has worked 6 months here; gets 50 cents a day. Is in the 2nd grade at school. Location: Sanford, North Carolina.

Refugees in two wars. This old couple Mr. and Mme. Leclaire, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this year, are now refugees for the third time. Their first experience was in 1870 when they had to file before the invading Germans, who later destroyed their homes. They had the same experience in 1914 and last year, when the Boches were pushed back, they returned and were able to rebuild with the assistance of the ARC. This spring in the German advance they were forced once more to leave and their last backward glance showed their house in flames. They have five sons in the army and three others have been killed since the war started. They have cared for eleven grandchildren. This picture shows them on their arrival at the ARC canteen at the Gare du Nord in Paris

Farm wheat elevator, Walla Walla County, Washington. The estimated 1941 crop was 55,000,000 bushels for the state, 15,000,000 bushels of last year's wheat was still in storage--making a total of 70,000,000 bushels of wheat to be stored. After all available storage facilities were used there would be at least 10,000,000 bushels over. State Farm Extension Service and AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Administration) had drawn up plans for farm elevators to take care of this wheat
