Backs plan for Federal Department of Art, Science, and Literature. Washington, D.C., Feb. 7. Declaring that no form of subsidy would bring more immediate cultural returns, Blanche Yurka, blonde stage star, today testified before the House Committee on Patents in behalf of the proposed Federal Department of sciences, Art, and Literature. Miss Yurka was one of a group of stage starts, musicians and writers who will come before the committee this week. With Miss Yurka is Frank Gilmore, Director of the Associated Artists and Actors of America
Proposed war referendum brings three witnesses to support people's vote on war. Washington, D.C., May 11. Retired Major General W.C. Rivers; Randolph Leigh, writers of McLean, Va., and Dr. Charles Tansill, Fordham professor and once professor at Washington's American University, who were supporting witnesses at a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee told hearings on a proposed war referendum amendment. Gen. Rivers said that wars 'allowed him to pick up a few medals, but what does the average citizen...or the average town in this country get out of war? What besides...heavy taxes and... disabled men?' Dr. Tansill urged adoption of the amendment as a means of curbing the power of the President to make war, and charged that both Polk and Madison involved the U.S. 'deliberately' in two wars. He also charged that the late Col. Edward M. House, Wilson's Secretary, had led the President down the road to war.

Alsberg, Director of the Federal Writers' Project, today told the House Committee Investigating Un- American Activities that he experienced some difficulty with communists on the New York Project, but added that the trouble had been eliminated and the program now was running smoothly

Wooward, Assistant WPA Administrator in charge of the Government Creative Work Program. Street in the residential section of Caldwell, Idaho. In Caldwell is the College of Idaho, the oldest institution of higher learning in the state. Idaho State Guide (Federal Writers' Project) says, "But none of these give the mental and spiritual flavor of the town (Caldwell), which with its nineteen different churches and its somewhat monastic quietness, is quite unlike any other in the state"
Bourne, Oregon. Crumbling buildings in a ghost mining town. The town came into existence in the 1870s and was notorious for the wildcat venture. Exodus from the camp occured in 1906 and most of the mines have remained closed. In the 1940 Oregon state guide (Federal Writers Project)  the population was given as one person. Now, May 1942, there were at least twenty people living in the town. Increase of population is due to growth of dredging for gold with a doodlebugs
