Tändsticksetikett  från Växjö tändsticksfabrik, med en plog avbildad "Plough Tändstickor"" Wäxiö tändsticksfabrik anlades 1868. Initiativtagare var handlanden Carl Schander som inspirerats av bröderna Lundström i Jönköping och tillsammans med bokhandlaren CG Södergren startade de Wäxiö tändsticksfabrik. Fabriken var belägen i området något väster om stadskärnan. Fabriken bestod av huvudbyggnad uppförd i parmsten jämte några flygelbyggnader och lagerhus i trä. Några år efter starten fanns ett åttiotal anställda varav hälften kvinnor. År 1875 hade man uppnått  nära 150 anställda och årsproduktionen uppgick till ett värde av cirka 200.000 kronor. Flera ägare, uppgång och nergångSödergren lämnade fabriken efter några år och Schander stod kvar som ensamägare till 1887 då han sålde till Swedish Match Company i London. Som disponent ledde Schander tändsticksfabriken till 1891 då Knut Johansson tillträdde. 1913 tog Förenade Tändsticksfabriker  med Ivar Kreuger över fabriken och verksamheten expanderade kraftigt. Fabriken byggdes till och försågs med maskinell utrustning samtidigt som produktionen ökade och antalet anställda var 1920 uppe i 400 och med ett tillverkningsvärde av 3.603.000 kronor.Huvudsakligen exporterades tändstickorna till Amerika och Indien men sen gick det raskt utför. 1921 med depression och osäkerhet i världen fanns det bara plats för 290 anställda och inte fulla veckor. Timlönen hade efter hand sjunkit från 1:30 till 73 öre med 10% tillägg för de som arbetar tre dagar i veckan eller mindre.En arbetares årsinkomst beräknas då ligga mellan 1060 - 1213 kronor. Fackföreningen begärde också hos stadsfullmäktige att arbetarna skulle befrias från skatt. Sedan 1917 ägs nu fabriken av Svenska Tändsticksaktiebolaget, det största företaget i världen inom sitt område. Fabriken utplånad av brandDen 30 maj 1922 inträffade en brand som fullständigt lade fabriken i ruiner och som också hotade den övriga bebyggelsen runt omkring. En nattvakt upptäckte branden vid 22-tiden i några sticktorkskåp och försökte förgäves släcka själv. Brandkåren tillkallades men eldsvådan fick snabbt fäste och redan efter en kvart var sju av fabrikens träbyggnader övertända. Vid 1-tiden på natten var man herre över elden och de omkringliggande fastigheterna räddade. Tändstickstrusten beslöt efter branden att fabriken inte skulle återuppbyggas man hade ju fler fabriker igång.
