Victorious purgees shelve administration's neutrality legislation for term. Washington, D.C., July 11. By a vote of 11-12, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today shelved the consideration of neutrality legislation until next term of Congress. By defeating the Pittman Resolution, they dashed the administration's hopes for repealing the arms embargo. Gillette vigorously denied that he voted as he did simply to take revenge for the president's attempt to defeat him at the last election. Both Senator Walter George, left, and Guy Gillette, right, have been in the center of a question mark since it became known that the committee would vote on neutrality legislation today. Both were intended victims of the 1938 [...], and today held controlling votes in the meeting

These were all the young children I could get at the Athens Hosiery Mill at noon. And at 9 A.M., although when I went through the mill at 7 A.M. alone Dec. 9th, I saw six little girls industriously at work standing on boxes so they could reach and helping their mothers and sisters. They appeared to be about 5 and 7 years old. (See report.) Location: Athens, Tennessee.
These were the youngest white boys (there were several younger negroes) that I could find working in the Parker Heading Co. Lumber Yards, Poplar Bluff, Mo. (Sometimes called the Great Western Lumber Co.) I went through the buildings and yards. Smallest white boy is Frank Childers, Front St., Poplar Bluff. He and the other small boys help trim and carry strips to make barrel headings. Location: Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Sunday morning at Lynchburg Cotton Mill (Va.) Ed Tolley, the smallest, said 15 years old, but that is very doubtful. Others in these three photos, Lucien Tolley, Herbert Aultico, Henry Daly, John Crawley. (See my report for addresses.) Most of these boys could not spell own name. All claimed to be over 14, but their disputes showed "These's a reason." They get from three to four dollars a week and some pay board. One said, "I get all over $2.60." Some were surely under twelve. All work. Lindsey Witt has been working there 2 years. Dewey Anderson, three years. M[y]ron Cole, some time. Location: Lynchburg, Virginia.

Works at Ewen Breaker. Lives in Sebastopol. Couldn't spell his own name and didn't know name of street he lives on. Seems to be under 12 years old. All were suspicious of my sending them to school. Philip Kurato's step-mother told me (through an interpreter) that he has a birth certificate showing him to be 13 years old; that he has been working in the breaker for two years - and that Squire Barrett gave him his working papers. The step-mother owns a home near by, said to be worth $1,500. Location: Port Griffith, Pennsylvania.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- After a 24-hour delay of the STS-105 launch, Commander Scott Horowitz is the first off the Astrovan returning the crews to the Operations and Checkout Building. Behind him is Mission Specialist Daniel Barry. Launch countdown activities for the 12-day mission were called off at about 5:12 p.m. Aug. 9 during the T-9 minute hold due to the high potential for lightning, a thick cloud cover and the potential for showers. These were clear violations of launch weather criteria. The next launch attempt will be on Friday, Aug. 10, at the preferred launch time of about 5:15 p.m. The launch window extends for about 5 minutes. On the mission, Space Shuttle Discovery will be transporting the Expedition Three crew and several scientific experiments and payloads to the International Space Station, including the Early Ammonia Servicer (EAS) tank. The EAS, which will support the thermal control subsystems until a permanent system is activated, will be attached to the Station during two spacewalks. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – During a free-flight test of the Project Morpheus vehicle at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the vehicle lifted off the ground and then experienced a hardware component failure, which prevented it from maintaining stable flight. No one was injured and the resulting fire was extinguished by Kennedy fire personnel. Engineers are looking into the test data and the agency will release information as it becomes available. Failures such as these were anticipated prior to the test, and are part of the development process for any complex spaceflight hardware. Testing of the prototype lander had been ongoing at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston in preparation for its first free-flight test at Kennedy Space Center. Morpheus was manufactured and assembled at JSC and Armadillo Aerospace. Morpheus is large enough to carry 1,100 pounds of cargo to the moon – for example, a humanoid robot, a small rover, or a small laboratory to convert moon dust into oxygen. The primary focus of the test is to demonstrate an integrated propulsion and guidance, navigation and control system that can fly a lunar descent profile to exercise the Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology, or ALHAT, safe landing sensors and closed-loop flight control.
