Among the men from local board No. 2 on Kauai, Hawaii who reported for physical examination prior to induction into the AJA [Americans of Japanese ancestry] combat unit taking shape in the territory were these three pairs of brothers. From left to right they are: Minoru, twenty-eight, and Chitsugi Manabe, twenty-three; Tooru, eighteen, and James S. Takenaka, twenty; and Shigeo, twenty-one, and Tadao Suemori, twenty. Tooru Takenaka was still a student in high school when he went up for his physical. He volunteered because "I want to go in with my brother to do my share."
