Baltimore, MD. Statistical data of great value in the future will accumulate in the files of the Social Security Board Records Office. To provide easy means of developing and studying this information, without disturbing the permanent records, acturial cards are reproduced from the original employee master cards. The master card is a [...] salmon pink. The acturial card is a bright green. They are of different colors so they will not be mixed together inadvertently. The photograph above shows a reproducing machine making acturial cards from master cards. The punched master card is placed in one compartment. A blank acturial card is placed in another. When the master card has been automatically carried to the proper position it stops, momentarilly. Meanwhile the blank acturial card is carried to another place in the machine. Electrical impulses cause the machine to punch on the acturial card the same holes, in the same position, as on the master card. The two cards are held in place while the part of the machine holding the acturial card telegraphs back to the part holding the master card to see that the punches in each are identical. Then the cards are released, one is in one pile and the other in another. The whole operation requires a small fraction of a minute

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – – At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, adult wild pigs line up for their food hunt in the grassy field The wild pigs have flourished in the environs around Kennedy, which shares a border with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, without many predators other than panthers and humans. Pigs were introduced to Florida in the 1500s and are now found statewide in wooded areas close to water. Pigs are omnivores, foraging on the ground and rooting just beneath the surface, which damages the groundcover. Wild pigs eat almost anything that has nutritional value, including tubers, roots, shoots, acorns, fruits, berries, earthworms, amphibians, reptiles and rodents. Their appearance is similar to domestic hogs, but leaner, with a longer, narrower head and a coarser, denser coat. Females may have two litters per year. The piglets are weaned in a few weeks but remain with the mother for several months. Photo credit: NASA/Ben Smegelsky KSC-2009-2111

Andrew Tester (left), Suffolk County Council archaeologist, explains the value of the archaeological treasure found on Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall, UK, to US Air Force (USAF) Colonel (COL) Richard T. Devereaux (second from left), Commander, 100th Air Refueling Wing (ARW). When a new softball field was planned, Mr. Tester and his colleagues were called in to survey an area first and they discovered the artifacts. This body was not only the only find that the archaeologists found, there were several other remains, pottery, and coins. The dates for most of the finds are believed to be from the early Roman age, 43 - 410 C.E. (Common Era)), but some items could fall into the Neolithic...

Senate Interstate Commerce Committee opens hearings today on transportation. Washington, D.C., April 3. The Senate Interstate Commerce Committee got off today for a series of hearings on public transportation problems, but the news value was considerably overshadowed by the appearance of Robert Montgomery in another committee at the same time. Carl R. Gray, Chairman of the president's committee of six on railroads, told the Committee that his group felt that an independent transportation board is needed to regulate all transportation, the board to be outside of the ICC jurisdiction. Gray urged that the federal board which he proposed handle water carriers as part of its duties. 4-3- 39

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Two wild pigs cross railroad tracks on grounds at NASA Kennedy Space Center. The wild pigs have flourished in the environs around KSC, which shares a border with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, without many predators other than panthers and humans. Appearance is similar to domestic hogs, but leaner, with a longer, narrower head and a coarser, denser coat. Females may have two litters per year. The piglets are weaned in a few weeks but remain with the mother for several months. KSC-05pd2263
