New oversize trailer for war workers. Here's an answer to the problem of transporting defense workers to outlying defense plants. It's the new, oversize bus trailer made almost entirely of non-critical materials which held its Washington premiere on April 13. Hauled by an ordinary one-and-a-half-ton truck tractor, it holds 141 persons and was designed and built by Office of Defense Transportation and War Production Board (WPB) officials with the cooperation of private companies. Weight of the trailer is 12,000 pounds as compared with 17,000 pounds for a standard type 40-passenger city bus. The complete unit is fifty-five feet long

Conversion. Electric shaver plant. This Norton type C six-inch semi-automatic cylindrical grinder in a New England plant used to grind motor shafts for the firm's normal production of electric dry shavers. It is now grinding spring collets which are used in turning machines to hold the work being turned. Such machines are vitally needed for the war production effort. The conversion of the machine was accomplished by replacing the one-inch vitrified aluminum oxide wheel shown here with a three-inch wheel and by enlarging the feed of the cutting solution. Tolerances on this war work are only .002 inches as compared with the tolerances on the normal production of .0002 inches (see pix #D-2974). Schick Inc., Stamford, Connecticut

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At the Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility, noted physicist Stephen Hawking, in the wheelchair, arrives at the runway for his first zero-gravity flight. The flight will be aboard a modified Boeing 727 aircraft owned by Zero Gravity Corp., a commercial company licensed to provide the public with weightless flight experiences. At left is Peter Diamandis, founder of the Zero Gravity Corp. At center is Nicola O'Brien, a nurse practitioner who is Hawking's aide. Hawking developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease in the 1960s, a type of motor neuron disease which would cost him the loss of almost all neuromuscular control. At the celebration of his 65th birthday on January 8 this year, Hawking announced his plans for a zero-gravity flight to prepare for a sub-orbital space flight in 2009 on Virgin Galactic's space service. P-29518 BW Range: 130,000 kilometers (80,000 miles) This highest-resolution Voyager 2 view of Ariel's terminator shows a complex array of transecting valleys with superimposed impact craters. This clear-filter, narrow-angle view has a resolution of about 2.4 km (1.5 mi). Particularly striking to Voyager scientists is the fact that the faults that bound the linear valleys are not visible where they transect one another across the valleys. Apparently these valleys were filled with deposits sometime after they were formed by tectonic processes, leaving them flat and smooth. Sinuous rilles (trenches) later formed, probably by some flow process. Some type of fluid flow may well have been involved in their evolution. ARC-1986-A86-7034
