Sunday school picnic. Much of the food brought into abandoned mining town of Jere, West Virginia by "neighboring folk" from other parishes. There is a great deal of "hard feelings" and many fights between Catholics and Protestants. Miners as a whole are not very religious, many not having any connections with church, though they may have religious background. Hard times has caused this to a certian extent. As one said, "The Catholic church expected us to give when we just didn't have it"

War ration book no. 3. This new ration book, replacement for present books when their stamps are used up, will be distributed during the early summer. It contains four pages of "point" stamps, similar to the point stamps in war ration book 2, though slightly different in design and printed in brown ink. It also contains four pages of "unit" stamps for the type of rationing now used for sugar, coffee, and shoes. Each page of fourty-eight stamps bears the design of a different war machine, including guns, tanks, aircraft carriers and planes. One of each of these stamps is reproduced separately below the picture of the book. Important note: Actual dimensions of the point ration stamps are 7/8 inch x 1 inch, while the unit stamps are 7/16 inch x 1 inch. The U.S. Secret Service requests that ration stamps not be reproduced in actual size, but less than 3/4 or over 1 1/2 times. Also, stamps should not be reproduced in color. This photograph, if reproduced, same size, meets these requirements

Ancient brain surgery. Miss Helen Hecker, secretary to Dr. [...] Curator of Physical Anthropology of the Smithsonian Institution, poses with an ancient trephined skull discovered in Alaska by Dr. Hrdlicka, which is believed to prove that brain surgery was practiced there as long ago as 2,000 years. Dr. Hrdlicka made his discoveries from the lower strata of an ancient settlement on Kodiak Island. He believes that trephining among the Indians was a practical surgical operation, designed to relieve pressure against the brain from a skull fracture, and to remove bone splinters. It also is believed possible that these holes were bored in skulls, at times, to let out evil spirits causing headaches, 11/23/35

This is a composite photo, assembled from separate images of Jupiter and Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 as imaged by the Wide Field & Planetary Camera-2 (WFPC-2), aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Jupiter was imaged on May 18, 1994, when the giant planet was at a distance of 420 million miles (670 million KM) from Earth. This 'true-color' picture was assembled from separate HST exposures in red, blue, and green light. Jupiter's rotation between exposures creates the blue and red fringe on either side of the disk. HST can resolve details in Jpiter's magnifient cloud belts and zones as small as 200 miles (320 km) across (wide field mode). This detailed view is only surpassed by images from spacecraft that have traveled to Jupiter. The dark spot on the disk of Jupiter is the shadow of the inner moon Io. This volcanic moon appears as an orange and yellow disk just to the upper right of the shadow. Though Io is approximately the size of Earth's Moon (but 2,000 times farther away), HST can resolve surface details. When the comet was observed on May 17, its train of 21 icy fragments stretched across 710 thousand miles (1.1 million km) of space, or 3 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. This required six WFPC exposures along the comet train to include all the nuclei. The image was taken in red light. The apparent angular size of Jupiter relative to the comet, and its angular separation from the comet when the images were taken, have been modified for illustration purposes. CREDIT: H.A. Weaver, T.E. Smith (Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI)) and J.T. Tranuger, R.W. Evans (Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)) and NASA. (HST ref: STSci-PR94-26a) ARC-1994-AC94-0353-1

Range : 7 million kilometers (5 million miles) Callisto is Jupiter's outermost Galilean satellites and darkest of the four(but almost twice as bright as Earth's Moon). Mottled appearance from bright and dark patches. Bright spots seem like rayed or bright halved craters seen on our Moon. This face is always turned toward Jupiter. Photo taken through violet filter. Ganymede is slightly larger than Mercury but much less dense (twice the density of water). Its surface brightness is 4 times of Earth's Moon. Mare regions (dark features) are like the Moon's but have twice the brightness, and believed to be unlikely of rock or lava as the Moon's are. It's north pole seems covered with brighter material and may be water frost. Scattered brighter spots may be related to impact craters or source of fresh ice. ARC-1979-A79-7020
