CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, left, joins Dr. Jon Olansen, Morpheus project manager, in the control room at the Shuttle Landing Facility for the first tethered flight of the Morpheus lander. After undergoing testing at Johnson Space Center in Houston for nearly a year, Morpheus arrived at Kennedy on July 27 to begin about three months of tests. A field, replete with boulders, rocks, slopes, craters and hazards to avoid, was created at the north end of Kennedy's runway to provide a realistic landscape for test flights of the lander. Morpheus utilizes autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology, or ALHAT, to navigate to a safe landing site during its descent. Project Morpheus is one of 20 small projects comprising the Advanced Exploration Systems, or AES, program in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. AES projects pioneer new approaches for rapidly developing prototype systems, demonstrating key capabilities and validating operational concepts for future human missions beyond Earth orbit. Trudeau Sanitarium, Hachette. Called, Grebouille, a very normal and a very naughty member of the community. Father died, recently, of TB. Naughty but normal is this little child of tubercular parents at Trudeau Sanitarium, Hachette, near Paris. The manor house of Hachette is an AMERICAN RED CROSS hospital for tubercular women. In the grounds nearby barracks have been built where about 180 children are housed, each for a period of three months or more. They are under-nourished children of tubercular tendencies, many of whom have tubercular parents. They are brought from bad living conditions in the cities and the good nourishment and outdoor life at Hachette go far to establish their health permanently

Negro Marines prepare for action. Breaking a tradition of 167 years, the U.S. Marine Corps started enlisting Negroes on June 1, 1942. The first class of 1,200 Negro volunteers began their training three months later as members of the 51st Composite Defense Battalion at Montford Point, a section of the 200 square mile Marine Base, Camp Lejeune, at New River, North Carolina. Evidence of the lack of racial friction may be seen in the sports program at the camp. On the baseball team Negro enlistees and white non-com officers are teammates. Camp Lejeune has its own baseball league, with the Montford Point team a strong contender for championship honors

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - On Launch Complex 17-B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the Delta II Heavy launch vehicle carrying the second Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity, is poised for launch after rollback of the Mobile Service Tower. Opportunity will reach Mars on Jan. 25, 2004. Together the two MER rovers, Spirit (launched June 10) and Opportunity, seek to determine the history of climate and water at two sites on Mars where conditions may once have been favorable to life. The rovers are identical. They will navigate themselves around obstacles as they drive across the Martian surface, traveling up to about 130 feet each Martian day. Each rover carries five scientific instruments including a panoramic camera and microscope, plus a rock abrasion tool that will grind away the outer surfaces of rocks to expose their interiors for examination. Each rover’s prime mission is planned to last three months on Mars.
