Tessie Sposato, 12 yrs. old girl and her mother picking nuts in attic of tenement, 141 Hudson St., N.Y. She holds the nuts against her dirty apron as she picks them out. Works until 9 p.m. some nights. They live in 2 small rooms; paying $5.00 a month rent. Makes $2.00 a week. A 15 yr. old brother works in factory and sleeps in folding bed in this room. Florence Valentino, 12 yrs. old, and sister Jennie, working on crochet hats in dirty kitchen tenement, 3126 Jerome Ave. (Bronx). They make heavy hats, muffs, scarfs, slippers, etc. Jennie, 15 yrs. old, works in a Tremont Av. factory part of the time. Can make 1Πdozen heavy hats in half a day. Florence makes five hats in half a day, being in school only half a day. Have been at it one year.  Location: New York, New York (State)
Mrs. Larocca, 233 E. 107th St., N.Y., making willow plumes in an unlicensed tenement. Photo taken Feb. 29, 1912. License was revoked Dec. 19, 1911.Applied for again Feb 7, 1912, inspected Feb. 13 and refused Feb 14, 1912. Feb. 29, 1912 I found nine families (including the janitress) at work on feathers or with traces of the day's work still on the floor. Still other families were reported to be doing the work also, but were not home. When our investigator made her first calls here, she found the whole tenement in much worse condition (see schedule) Children had bad skin trouble, fever, etc. Grandmother was working the day this photo was taken. Mrs. Tony Racioppo, 260 Elizabeth St., N.Y. 1st floor rear, finishing pants in dirty tenement home. Althou[gh] it is a licensed house, the whole place is very much run down. The ahllway [i.e., hallway] is in the same condition as that one at 266 Elizabeth (see photo). Baby had bad cough. Mother said recovering from measles.  Location: New York, New York (State)
Mrs. Montemora, Fifty-five years old, is janitress for a large tenement, 133 W. Houston St., (lives Apt. 7) housing 26 families. When not tending the furnace or occupied with other duties for others and her own family, she makes flowers, assisted by her niece Josephine, 12 years old. They both work until 10:00 P.M. frequently. Photo was taken at 2:30 P.M., Feb 2, 1912, a school-day, and their only explanation was, "She just stayed out." Making buds. Several adult men relatives live with them. The flowers bring in only a dollar or two a week.  Location: New York, New York (State)

Civarro family, 2106 Second Avenue, second floor back, working on patriotic flag pins. They get 3 cents a gross for inserting pin and putting onto card. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. The tenement is not licensed for homework. Baby was a premature child and very small and frail. "It is so skinny." Husband is a laborer.  Location: New York, New York (State) / Lewis W. Hine.
