The U.S. Postal Service unveils its newest series of stamps, Space Discovery, at the KSC Visitor Complex. The event coincided with NASA's 40th anniversary on this date. Participating in the unveiling are (left to right) Barry Ziehl, U.S. Postal Service; JoAnn Morgan, KSC associate director of advanced development and shuttle upgrades; Karla Corcoran, Postal Service inspector general; Kristene A. Graves, a student from Lewis Carroll Elementary School ; and Dr. Donald Thomas, astronaut and veteran of four Shuttle missions. Behind them is the mockup of an orbiter. During the ceremony, Kristene read her essay "My Stamp Adventure" that she had written for an area-wide contest for the event. The stamps were designed by renowned aerospace artist Attila Heija. The strip of five individual stamps together make up a futuristic scene complete with space vehicles, a futuristic space city, and space explorers. The stamps are available nationwide beginning Oct. 1 KSC-98pc1198

Originally begun in 1950, the KATUSA program was designed to augment US fighting forces just after the breakout of the Korean War. Unfavorable weather conditions kept it on the ground at Dyess AFB, Texas, until it could return to Florida on March 5 when it landed at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Skid Strip. Columbia had to wait for the orbiter Atlantis which had completed a ferry flight to KSC on March 5 to be towed from the SLF before making the final hop to KSC. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- What may be a yellow rat snake slithers through the grass on Kennedy Space Center. Yellow rat snakes are found throughout most of Florida and the Keys. They also live in a narrow strip along the Atlantic coast through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. They are often found in warm southern swamps, and are also common in abandoned buildings and barns. Besides rats, yellow rat snakes will eat a wide variety of small mammals, birds, and eggs. They are considered the best tree climbing snake in Florida. The scales on their bellies are squared off, which aids them tremendously with climbing. They are strong constrictors, and kill their prey by suffocation. KSC shares a boundary with the Merritt Island Wildlife Nature Refuge. The refuge is a habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles. SDO is the first space weather research network mission in NASA's Living With a Star Program. The spacecraft's long-term measurements will give solar scientists in-depth information about changes in the sun's magnetic field and insight into how they affect Earth.
