West Mine, West Frankfort, Illinois. Now abandoned. This mine has been down about a year. General caption: Many of the miners displaced by machinery in the larger mines are left stranded after mines are abandoned; have opened shallow primitive workings on the coal seam where it occurs close to the surface. The output of these shallow mines, known locally as gopher holes, is processed by a crude method and sold to truckers at about half the price of deep-vein coal. Many of the gopher holes have no storage in the tipple, and the miners underground are idle when no truck is waiting at the chute to load coal. Wages of gopher hole miners run from seventy-five cents to five dollars per day, and many miners earn less than WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers. Some of the larger gopher holes, such as Blue Ribbon Number 2 at Spillertown, Williamson County, are better equipped, pay better wages, and produce as high as 40,000 tons a year

Where the water level is so near the surface that you cannot dig a cave, you will have to build your storage house aboveground. This one is made of poles, and covered with straw, leaves and dirt. Grass should be planted on top of the dirt to keep the earth from washing away. The front wall must be made double thickness, with sawdust or other insulating material between to prevent freezing in winter and to keep cool in summer. Take notice that there is a lock on the door

This aerial photo captures many of the facilities involved in Space Shuttle launches. At center is the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The curved road on the near side is the newly restored crawlerway leading into the VAB high bay 2, where a mobile launcher platform/crawler-transporter currently sits. The road restoration and high bay 2 are part of KSC’s Safe Haven project, enabling the storage of orbiters during severe weather. The crawlerway also extends from the east side of the VAB out to the two Space Shuttle launch pads. In the distance is the Atlantic Ocean. To the right of the far crawlerway is the turn basin, into which ships tow the barge for offloading new external tanks from Louisiana KSC-00pp0735
