Hurricane/Tropical Storm - New Orleans, La. , August 29, 2005 -- The New Orleans Lakefront Airport, which was built in 1934 on the south shore of Lake Ponchartrain, incurred massive damage to all its facilities from Hurricane Katrina's impact. In the 1950's, the façade of the airport's administrative building was covered with concrete panels in an effort to harden the exterior for use as a fallout shelter. With the help of FEMA Public Assistance Program's improved project funding, and assistance from the Environmental & Historic Preservation program, the applicant has been able to restore the facade of the building to its original 1934 appearance.
