'Tomato Can' radio microphone presented to Smithsonian Institution. Washington, D.C., Oct. 28. The 'Tomato Can' radio microphone which was used to broadcast the Harding-Cox election returns on November 2, 1920, is one of a series of historic microphone presented recently to the Smithsonian Institution. The 'Tomato Can' is the actual instrument used in the broadcast from station KDKA, Pittsburgh, which is generally considered the first announced broadcast and the world's beginning of broadcasting. Walton, Senior Entomologist of the Division of Cereal and Forage Insects, U.S. Department of Agriculture, whose unique hobby is the making of metal casts of all sorts of insects from the tiniest Scarab to the enormous six-inch Goliath Beetle, which feeds on the tropical vegetation of New Guinea. In his distinctly original work Mr. Walton uses the Galvano-Plasty method of metal coating, which he set about developing over 30 years ago. This is an electro-mechanical process similar to the electrotype process used in making newspaper cuts. 6/18/37

Navy gets original commission of John Paul Jones. Washington, D.C., March 12. The orginal commission of John Paul Jones, as captian in the United States Navy, dated October 10, 1776, and issued under authority of the Continental Congress with signature of John Hancock as its president was presented to the Secretary of Navy Charles Edison today. Capt. H.A. Baldridge, U.S.N. retired, curator of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, presented the valuable document to the secretary on behalf of the owner, John L.
