Bubble Chamber Event. Resonances last typically for a mere 10(-23 power) seconds and therefore leave no discernible track in a bubble chamber. But by calculating back from the energies and angles of the particles that are detected, physicists can infer that a resonance has existed. In this picture from a bubble chamber at Berkley, an antiproton, coming from below, annihilates with a proton to produces two negative pions, a neutral pion and two positive pions. The negative pions move off to the left, the positive pions to the right, while the pi-zero is undetected. The lower pi-plus decays to a muon, the short piece of track, and then to a positron, which curls out of the picture. The information in the picture is consistent with the lower-energy pions, the lower tracks on left and right-being the decay products of a resonance state known as the omega. Image not dated. Cape Canaveral, Fla. -- At the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians using an overhead crane, move the aeroshell, a component of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), back to a work stand after a spin and balance test. The aeroshell consists of the backshell which carries the parachute and several components used during later stages of entry, descent and landing, and the spacecraft's heat shield. MSL's components include a compact car-sized rover, Curiosity, which has 10 science instruments designed to search for evidence on whether Mars has had environments favorable to microbial life, including chemical ingredients for life. The unique rover will use a laser to look inside rocks and release its gasses so that the rover’s spectrometer can analyze and send the data back to Earth. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Dust particles are readied for an experiment for the Electrodynamic Dust Shield for Dust Mitigation project in the Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory in the SwampWorks at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The fabricated material is designed to mimic the dust on the lunar surface. The technology works by creating an electric field that propagates out like the ripples on a pond. This could prevent dust accumulation on spacesuits, thermal radiators, solar panels, optical instruments and view ports for future lunar and Mars exploration activities.
